Prequel to the Palaisdaan Series
(Earlier that Day)

I woke up this morning with my father tugging at my side. He told me that he is going ahead to Troso (our farm site about 2/3 kilometer north of our home in San Felipe).

"I’ll see you in Troso in about an hour", he said.

"Yes Dad", said I.

(My head was still spinning mildly from drinking "Virgin Coke" that I had with my friends Eugene and Pepito from last night…but that’s another story altogether)

Dad adds, "Also, here is P5 for the bilog and coke. Don’t forget, huh!" "Yes Dad!"

(My head spins again when he mentioned the bilog. Bilog, by the way, is the smaller size Ginebra San Miguel Gin bottle. Bilog means round. The larger size bottle is shaped square… and so the monicker "kuatro cantos" or "four corners" for the larger bottle. Anyway, when my Dad mentioned "bilog", I could smell... flashback!!! from last night…. the beer, ... the gin, ...the ice... all in a batya (hala! tagay na!). There were 6 of us drinking to Eugene’s birthday. Of course, we had goat (kaldereta) for pulutan and the infamous "kropek". Does anybody remember kropek anymore????)

I get up 10 minutes later. I eat breakfast... or at least attempt to eat breakfast. I guess I had a little too much to drink last night. I then got myself ready to go to Troso.

I say goodbye to my Mom. I say goodbye to Sampaguita, our dog. I get on my bike and head to the Sari-sari store at the corner (the P5 bill is in my pocket).

"Tao Po!!!", I said.

"Yes Gaylord, good morning! How may I help you?", says Melva. (Melva, by the way was a classmate of mine in elementary school. She then went to ZCI for high school while I went to St Columban’s High School.)

"One bilog and one bottle of coca-cola please."

"Here you go", she says.

"Here’s the payment, thanks! Bye!"

(Melva was a smart cookie. I knew that she went to college on a scholarship. I wonder how she’s doing now? I haven’t heard any word about her in like 25 years...hummm?)

Well, still reeling from the hangover, I peddle on to Troso. It is not too hot yet. It is 8:20 am...

Virgin Coke (aka Beer-Gin-Coke). This concoction of alcohol goes by the ratio of 1 bottle on beer (San Miguel beer), 1 bottle of gin (bilog) and 1 bottle of coca-cola.

Just add ice, and you are set to go. On a larger scale, use the ratio of 3 bottles of beer to 1 kwatro kantos bottle of gin and 1 family size coca-cola... plus even more ice. You’ll also need a much bigger container... and more friends to help you out. You can taste the Virgin... eheste (ehe!)... Beer-Gin till it hurts!!!

Sorry... no picture this time!!!
